On the hill opposite the medieval city, a different Lisbon rises — shaped by the post-1755 earthquake reconstruction plan and by the spirit of Romanticism, which found a home here. For centuries, this was one of the city’s noble arteries, frequented by artists, politicians, aristocrats and bourgeois. In the 19th century, Chiado became Lisbon’s cultural and social heart — a stage for encounters, ideas, debate and discovery.

That cosmopolitan energy is still alive today. It’s the trendy, artistic and bohemian side of Lisbon — full of bookshops and theatres, literary cafés, Art Deco kiosks, antique shops and historic lifts.

On this walk, we pass through emblematic places like Bertrand Bookshop (the oldest in the world still operating), the iconic café A Brasileira, the Santa Justa Lift, São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint, Bairro Alto and the trendy Príncipe Real.

It’s a route where the city reveals itself in a more open, creative and vibrant way — a Lisbon that reinvents itself without ever losing the charm of its past.
